Hair Extensions Aftercare: Tousles or Tangles? A buyer's guide

Yes I’ll openly admit it, I have hair extensions. It all started after a horrible hair stylist chopped six inches accidentally-I was completely devastated! Many of you will understand when I say, my hair was my security blanket. While trying to make a shorter haircut work, I unfortunately caused a great deal of heat damage despite copious amounts of protectant spray. What that meant is every time I went in for a haircut, they had to remove all the growth and so my hair just stayed the same length perpetually.
Fast forward many years, over a dozen extension brands, tape, keratin, clips ins etc along with various products, and I have perfected the combination for hair extension aftercare.
Note: this unfortunately does not include information for those who have very coarse hair and need a weave. I do not have a lot of experience with that type of extension and don’t want to lead anyone astray.
First, If you’re buying hair extensions for the first time do yourself a favor and spend a little more money. Whether clip in or permanent, you will want Remy Indian Temple Hair or European. Remy means that all of the hair cuticles are pointed in the same direction, minimizing tangling. Avoid Asian hair. It is not Remy, despite what it claims, and is treated with silicone to keep it smooth but after a couple washes and styles, that silicone wears off and you will have buyers remorse. I’m writing another post about everything hair extensions that should cover this information more in depth. So subscribe and stay posted. (sales pitch over)
Having tried dozens of brands, I would first and foremost suggest the Laced Hair brand which you can purchase at https://lacedhair.com/ . If you’re looking for clip ins and for some reason can’t find your color at Laced, Bellami is a good alternative. I suggest Laced Hair first because they tangle less and the color doesn’t fade (Bellami's fades) and I mean, I wouldn’t wear them if I didn’t love the product. Those of you who know me know that I am EXTREMELY particular about which products/brands I use.
Second, Every brand will try to sell you on their “extension specific” product and I have tried dozens. They definitely work to an extent but honestly, they’re expensive and are as effective as the following store bought combination.
John Frieda color protectant shampoo and Aussie 3 minute miracle.
Most extensions fade since they are usually dyed (some brands with carpet dye) and a color protectant shampoo is a necessity, even if your personal hair color is natural like mine. You can always go for a different shampoo, I just like this one because it has just a tiny amount of tint which keeps the extensions looking vibrant. My laced ones are the same color after four months of wear as they are after one.
The second product, Aussie 3 minute miracle, is a NECESSITY. I could not find anything that would get my extensions feeling as smooth as the day I bought them. I just had a gut feeling about this product one day when I was buying my John Frieda and took a chance. It is the best product I have ever found for hair extensions and I tell every client and friend who will listen about it.
Third, Since the extensions are being held in artificially and can put unnecessary pressure on your hair, you need a special brush that can be found at your local grocery store or by following the link below. It is called a wet brush and although it may take longer to smooth, it minimizes damage and is very important for the longevity of your extensions. Every stylist I know that deals with extensions uses them and tells their clients to buy them.
You can purchase the shampoo, conditioner, and brush by clicking this link and selecting the pictures. They're all linked up to the Target website. You can also just pick them up at the store if you don't like ordering online. https://www.sweatpantsandpageantry.com/fashion
Hopefully this post helped you save a few dollars and keeps your extensions smooth and beautiful :)
