Farmhouse Table Of Our Dreams

Our new antique dining room table is officially my favorite piece in our home-it also legitimately weighs 500 pounds so it's not leaving anytime soon.

When Ryan and I got married, I had already owned the house for a year which meant it was completely furnished. The problem with that was, it felt like he had moved into my space. I tried to loosen my grip on the decor a bit and let him put his wooden tiki head, coin collection and secret service mug on our dresser. But other than some bits and pieces, it was still filled with all of the furniture I had picked without him.

We both hated my dining room table and it was the only piece I didn’t thoughtfully purchase because honestly, I just needed a table and was spending so much on everything else, (moving into a house is EXPENSIVE) I just needed to fill the space and figured I would upgrade after all of the essentials were purchased.

So fast forward to November-we have a date day at an antique festival in Leipers Fork near Franklin, TN and we came across this AMAZING work table from the early 1900s. It had the original vices, hardware and people were swarming the piece. We had no intention of purchasing a table but Ryan, being the winsome orator that he is, gave an impassioned speech about how he had never purchased a piece of furniture before and how it would make our house feel like home etc etc: As if I really needed any convincing, we made the impulse buy before anyone else could. Honestly probably the largest impulse purchase I have ever made and 100% worth it. It's a once in a lifetime piece.

Since it was technically a work table and not a dining room table, it needed some work done to meet our needs. We had to take 3 inches off of the bottom and once then the sides had to be brought up so we and our guests could fit their legs under the table, that would be nice. Unfortunately, we had to removed one of the vices in the process but luckily the second was able to be salvaged. Can we just take a moment and appreciate how cool that is?

After that came the chairs and since the table didn’t quite fit the decor of the house, the design of the chairs was very important. I loved the tufted ones I saw but decided on clean lines to make it more contemporary and ultimately picked these because the brass nails on the bottom pulled in the brass nails from the table, creating a cohesive look.

Now we are just in the process of cleaning and restoring the wood and then eventually getting a better centerpiece. However I couldn’t be happier with the final result: a lot of work but worth it.

What do you think? Into antiques or store bought and no fuss?
