I feel inclined to write this post after a couple discussions where clients told me that they have never washed their makeup brushes. One has even had hers a couple years without washing…yeah...
That being said, I started asking around and am SHOCKED by how many people do not wash their brushes and am here to tell you, that is unacceptable and they need to be washed!!!!
Have you ever wondered as you gaze at your makeup brushes, why the makeup stays? Why, even after you use the product, it lingers and stains the bristles? Why the bristles start looking janky and clump together? There’s a very simple answer to your ponderings:
Oil. Oil. Oil. Oil. Oil.
Do you know what can clog pores? Oil. Do you know what can cause acne? Oil. Oily makeup brushes also collect bacteria, viruses, and even fungi. There’s even a story of a woman named Katie Wright from Austin, TX who was hospitalized for a staph infection that they traced back to, you guessed it, her makeup brushes.
Now the latter are extreme examples but clogged pores and acne are a very common symptom of dirty makeup brushes and it’s such a simple thing to fix that I don’t understand why we don’t do it.
It’s honestly an easy process if you just make it your weekly routine: I do most of my beauty rituals on Sunday. I’m not the best at it and have definitely gone 3-4 weeks without cleansing my own brushes (except when i'm doing shoots, I always cleanse those ones after every use).
Daily
Cleansing Spray.
Once you are done with your brush, spray it off and dab on a clean paper towel.
Weekly
Deep Clean with Makeup Brush Specific Shampoo or baby shampoo. You can use other types but these tend to be better on the glue and keep the bristles from getting brittle and breaking.
Get yourself a cleaning mat (link at bottom). I promise it will be worth it. Put a dollop of shampoo on the mat, wet the brush and gently swirl, brush, stroke, or whatever you need to do to gently wash the bristles. Then rinse it off in water until the makeup is all gone from the brush.
Once washed, store in a cup like i do or on a clean paper towel.
Wasn’t that easy?! Please ladies, do your skin a favor and WASH YOUR BRUSHES
Also fun fact-makeup goes on better when using a clean brush! Who would have known!
